Mallory Pitch

Reds Pitching still bad? Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory would like to be rememberinged for reforms he brought to city government. Right now, he's best known for his laughably bad ceremonial first pitch.

The pitch was short and several feet to the first-base side of home plate on Monday. It was so horrible that umpire Randy Marsh mockingly threw Mallory out of the game. It's been played over and over on Web sites and reviewed by pundits. Mallory is doing his best to take the ribbing in stride.

In jest, he blamed his catcher, former Reds star Eric Davis. "Eric Davis missed the sign," Mallory said. "I called for a pitchout." Mallory, 45, admits he was not much of an athlete. "Who would have thought such a bad pitch could bring such good attention to the city of Cincinnati?" Mallory said. "I have an opportunity to talk about great things that are going on in the city."

Cincinnati had to wait until 2006 for the honor of having a sitting president throw the first pitch. Last year President Bush came to Cincinnati and became the first President throw out the first pitch at a Reds Opening Day.

In an Interview with NBC News Anchor Brian Williams she put the request in perspective by noting the it cost less than four hours in Iraq.
